NEW REPORT: The New Economics of Innovation and Transition: Evaluating Opportunities and Risks

Driving the Transition to Zero-Emission Trucks

When it comes to lifetime cost, electric trucks are overtaking diesel. And the right policies can drive us even faster – unlocking benefits for economies, air quality and the climate.

“Driving the transition to zero-emission trucks” is the latest report by the Economics of Energy Innovation and System Transition (EEIST) programme. The research covers analysis of the total cost of ownership of commercial vehicles – looking at purchase price, fuel or electricity, and maintenance over the vehicle’s lifetime.

For some types of vehicles and in some regions of the world the tipping point has already been reached. Electric vans in China and India are already cheaper over their lifetime than diesel vans. Overall, the tipping point is closer than previously expected as sales grow and technology becomes better and cheaper.

The challenge for governments is to identify the right policies to advance this transition. This report looks at how the right combination of regulatory policies, subsidies, and taxes can be effective in accelerating the transition.

As well as helping tackle climate change, switching to clean trucking makes economic sense. It reduces reliance on expensive oil imports and cuts businesses’ costs, which could help to boost productivity, growth and employment.
